About us
Pathogens don’t stop at borders. Neither do we.
Infectious diseases have persistently challenged humanity, causing widespread suffering and death, and remain a significant global threat. Despite significant progress over the past century, infectious diseases still account for more than a quarter of deaths worldwide, especially among young children. Fortunately, we possess the tools to prevent many of these fatalities. Our challenge is to deliver interventions quickly and effectively where needed, especially in resource constrained environments. By combining disease surveillance, laboratory science, and data analytics, we can identify when and where infections are occurring to develop the most effective prevention and treatment strategies.
To maximize this potential, we need to overcome the traditional barriers within scientific research. That’s why we established the Experimental and Population-based Pathogen Investigation Center (EPPIcenter), a unique environment designed to integrate various scientific disciplines vital to combating infectious diseases. At the EPPIcenter, we merge cutting-edge field studies, molecular technologies, and analytical methods to advance research, develop innovative laboratory and computational tools, and train the next generation of scientists.
Our goal is to transform infectious disease research into a more agile and cohesive field, empowering us to make strides against pathogens that impact global health such as influenza, malaria, COVID-19, and dengue. This work is crucial for those directly affected by these diseases and for broader efforts to improve public health and prevent future outbreaks. By fostering collaboration and innovation, we aim to create a healthier world for everyone.
